Made of Steel

Sheffield artist launches kickstarter for new comic

If you’ve drank beer in Sheffield you’ll probably be familiar with Jim Connolly‘s work. The artist has illustrated for some of the cities finest breweries including Kelham Island Brewery & Little Critters

Now living in Manchester Jim wants to pay home to his hometown with ‘Made Of Steel’, a comic book based around Steel City, an alternative version of Sheffield. This project is done solely by the artist himself and he needs your help.

Made Of Steels teams

Jim says “I was sat on a bus with my mum circa ’82 and was shocked to discover that Spiderman, the Hulk, Batman etc were not based in Sheffield. I was deeply gutted and think in retrospect that much of my adult career has been shaped by trying to put that moment right.

I knew I wanted to create a comic about one of the places I’ve lived but becoming a dad made me want to create something more upbeat and all-ages friendly with a much broader appeal than I’ve aimed for in a comic before. We love the movie ‘Into the Spiderverse’ which does the all-ages tone masterfully and the fun we had the day we saw it together was the real catalyst for me making this book.”

“Whilst Marvel/ DC/ Image etc have teams of people working on every page I’m doing every aspect solo which obviously takes a lot of time.”

He needs your help, every penny counts but don’t worry, you will be rewarded.

“There will be many different tiers from a low cost digital version of the book right up to being able to actually appear in it to score the winning goal in the Steel City Derby that is going on in the background of the main battle. I will also have tiers to pledge for the original artwork pages, art prints of the alt-universe teams logos and other cool rewards.

If I fail to reach my target I get nothing so literally everything counts and any help to complete my quest is massively appreciated!”

Help Jim out and back him here.
