Lockdown Update: The Harlequin
It’s been a mad few weeks. Our daily lives have changed, we miss seeing the friendly faces behind our favourite independents. We are sure you do too, so we thought we’d check in.
Not only have they had to adapt their own lifestyle to the new normal, their business has had to change too.
We caught up with Pete, landlord at The Harlequin.
What was your initial reaction to lockdown?
I wasn’t shocked, we were expecting it and personally I think it should have been sooner.
How has your business changed over the past few weeks?
Obviously as a pub we closed on March 20th so we adapted to a take away service only. We have a small range of ales, lagers and ciders. We also do home made pies, vegetarian meals and chip butties to go. 5-9pm everyday, service at the entrance, card payment only. Order via Facebook or twitter page. We do sell out pretty quickly.
We also supply preorder fruit and veg and dairy products from our wholesalers and act as a delivery / collection hub.
How do you see the long-tern impact on small businesses?
It’s going to be struggle as we are a live music venue and several community groups and clubs use the pub as a base. We’ll just have to wait for government guidance.
What has been your daily coping strategy in these crazy times?
If there’s time to lean, there’s time to clean!
